Colour of Dreams Blog Hop

I'm very happy to participate in this blog hop hosted by Toltec Jewels of Jewel School Friends. All participants were sent a unique handmade bead and were to design around the bead using  our dreams as inspiration !
A wonderful concept and I'm not at all surprised at where it came from. I met TJ last year when she was my partner in the 7th BSBP and have come to know her as a warm, caring, contemplative person who beautifully expresses her intelligence, compassion and spirituality in her writing. I am blessed to call her my friend. So of course I jumped at the chance to enter her blog hop and the reveal is today!

The beautiful and colorful art beads that were given to each participant (50 of us!) were made by polymer clay artist, Patricia Handschuh of Color of Dreams and posted at quite a personal expense by TJ. Thank you both so much for your generosity.

Now about my dreams...... I feel like I'm living my dream right now. I have retired from a enriching and satisfying career as a nurse which was everything and more than I ever dreamed possible when I was a young girl fresh out of college. I've met so many wonderful people, patients and co-workers, and had amazing opportunities to learn and grow as a nurse throughout my career. Now that I've retired I'm doing what I've been dreaming of for years.....designing and making jewelry! I'm also spending much more time with friends and family and enjoying every moment of my dream life!

I'm generally an optimistic person and when I make jewelry I try to reflect this attitude  with positive colours and themes. Initially I was stumped with what to do with my art bead but eventually an idea developed. I ended up making 2 different versions of the bracelet  and can't really decide which one will be my forever one. I've been using a lot of Mykonos beads lately and love the earthy, aged look of the patina on the copper. The first bracelet features a fish clasp and dangle bead from the Mykonos collection at Stinky Dog Beads.

I included the spiral beads because spirals have consistently appeared in many of my jewelry designs and I have adopted the spiral in my logo so it seemed appropriate to use it in my "dream" bracelet and earrings. The colored jade beads pick up the lovely blue-green shade in the Color of Dreams bead and the lampwork beads from Unicorne Beads add a touch of sparkle.
The starfish below represents the one part of my dream that I'm not living now......beach life.....but who knows what the future holds!

Of course once I had finished and photographed my jewelry I had second thoughts (nothing new for me) when I came across this magical disc that was gifted to me from one of my suppliers. (Sorry to say I can't remember who.) It seemed as if was telling me to use it. I played around and tried to age it with a bit of black shoe polish which also made the engraved letters stand out. I added an antique brass clasp and chain extension to make it adjustable . Here is my second version.

I think I prefer the first one but the dream disc does work as well. What do you think?
Again I want to thank Patricia and Rita for this great blog hop. Please visit the blogs of the other participants and see what their dreams are!

  1. The first one... that's what I would prefer too - seems, we have the same sense of taste! Love that patina hook!

  4. It's great that you designed your bracelet so as to be able to change out the clasps, Nan! I love Mykonos, both the ceramics and the copper, so if I HAD to choose, it would be the first. But #2 is so very appropriate to the subject! It looks fab either way :)

[I just noticed I am "pageview number 11, 111", Nan. I look for signs EVERYWHERE *TeeHee*]

  5. I too like the first one best. The second one looks like it has two focal points and i'm not sure i like that. Although i like the 'dream disc' enough that i think it should have a bracelet where its the focal point. Hugs!deb

  6. Lovely. I, too, prefer #1. It keeps the flower bead the focal.

  7. Great bracelet Nan. The dream circle fits the theme but I think that the first idea fits the beads better.

  8. I like the dream circle for a bracelet. Both are very pretty!

  9. Tough choice but I really think that I would go with the first design. The 'Dream' round is great but it really deserves to be a focal on its own.

  10. Excellent piece! I love how your color choices made the bead pop! Great job and thanks for posting!

  11. I prefer the first design too - just! You've chosen perfect colours to complement your bead. Beautiful.

  12. Both are so different and lovely. I think either would be a great choice. I do love the dream word charm though :) Christie

  13. I love the disc, it brings a unique look to your design but the first design allows multiple wrist sizes.

  14. They are both pretty designs, but I think I prefer the first one. It is eye catching and different..:)

  15. I think I like the first one, but the 2nd one is very fitting for this hop. Love the colors and design of them both.

  17. Both are incredible, but I think I am partial to the first one. Your bead had beautiful colors and you showcased it so very well. Beautiful!

  18. This turned out so nice - the blue beads makes the focal stand out. The dangle adds character. I prefer the first version also. Congrats on your retirement.

  20. I love that you made and remade your bracelet, Nan -- you are so generous with your art, thoughtful and gifted. I love both, but... if I had to pick a favorite -- I like the way the second style includes the dream finding & the way that finding repeats the circle shape of the art bead, and I like the dark chain for bringing out the framing around the shapes of color in the art bead. It changes how I see the art bead -- did you ever draw swirls and random shapes on paper as a kid with a black crayon & then color in the spaces? I did and I loved how the coloring ending up looking like stained glass -- that is how the art bead looks to me with the black chain & darkened "dream" wording in confluence with it :) I LOVE IT!

Thank you for sharing your talents with us in our hop!

  21. I love the 2nd one - mostly because the "Dream" really ties into the theme but more because it would serve as a constant reminder to me to keep dreaming

  22. Nan, it was very hard for me to pick which one I liked best. I had to keep looking at them over & over. They are both fabulous!!! However, after about 10 back & forths, I think I like the 2nd one best because the "dream" theme is highlighted there & the dark chain makes the bead POP! But either one is fabulous! :)

  23. Looks like you're well on your way to fulfilling your dream. What about using the dream disc as part of your clasp and still having the dangle. That way you've included the disc as part of the 'dream' theme and still have the lovely dangle to go along with the aged look.

  25. 'So nice to read that you are so happy in your new -dreamed- life! About the 2 bracelets, I think I would combine 1 and 2 too :-) because of being able to 'use' the lovely dream disc and the great bangle as well!

  26. I love both versions, but I have to say the disk really makes it ! Sorry this comment took so long, this week has been a little heretic.
